President Moon Jae-in's approval rating dropped to its lowest level last week, a poll showed Monday, amid an ongoing investigation into an opinion rigging scandal targeting his former and current aides.

Moon's approval rating came to 58.1 percent in a survey conducted Monday through Friday by Realmeter. The reading marks a 5.1 percentage point plunge from 63.2 percent tallied a week earlier. It also marks the first time Moon's approval rating has dipped to below 60 percent.

The sharp drop follows the recent summons of South Gyeongsang Province Gov. Kim Kyoung-soo, who worked as a key election campaigner for Moon in the lead-up to the 2017 presidential election.

The former lawmaker of the ruling Democratic Party has been summoned twice for questioning over possible involvement in suspected attempts by a local blogger to manipulate online opinion in favor of the party and its presidential candidate.

A special counsel investigating the case has also summoned an incumbent secretary to the president, Song In-bae, for questioning.

The scandal has apparently affected the ruling party as well, with its approval rating slipping 2.2 percentage points to 40.6 percent, while that of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party gained 1.6 percentage points to 19.2 percent.

The progressive Justice Party's approval rating slightly dropped to 14.2 percent, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous week.

The ratings of the minor opposition Bareunmirae Party and the Party for Democracy and Peace came to 5.5 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively, down 0.3 percentage point and 0.4 percentage point. (Yonhap)
