The traditional painting technique, better-known among locals as "Nakwha," uses a heated iron to burn the surface of paper, textile, wood or leather to draw certain patterns or objects.
Since inheriting the drawing technique in 1972, Kim has drawn many paintings and won numerous awards. Over the past 46 years, Kim has further developed the traditional drawing skills.
Prior to the CHA's recognition of Kim as a master of traditional painting, he was designated by the North Chungcheong Provincial government as an artisan of painting.
The drawing technique dates back to the late Chosun Dynasty and has been passed down from one generation to the next in the southwestern rural county of Imsil since the 19th century.
CHA has designated important cultural properties, including music, dance, games and rituals as intangible cultural properties and a person or an organization that has such skills or artistic talents are designated as the holder of the property.
