Luxury dessert buffets emerging as culinary fad among trendy consumers

The time for strawberries has arrived for the hotel industry as more and more are keenly hosting luxurious strawberry festivals.

Since their debut in 2006, promotions featuring strawberries have established themselves as signature annual events ― particularly for the winter time ― at hotels that are exploring measures to roll out innovative menus amid ever-intensifying competition over the "seasonal" fruit.

"The strawberry-themed festivals burst onto the scene in the hotel sector after gaining favor from millennials who love to take food photos for social media. Since then, they have evolved to higher tiers with each hotel inventing new menus to stand out against their rivals," said an official of the hotel industry.

Starting Saturday, the Grand Walkerhill Seoul will hold its Very Berry Strawberry promotion that is scheduled to run till April 28 at its lobby lounge, the Pavilion. It will be available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the period.

On the occasion of its 12th anniversary, the property will add 21 new items to the menu, making the total 45, including three new expensive dishes ― foie gras, caviar and truffles.

For those who may get fed up with strawberry-themed food, chefs at its live station will cook 14 dishes on the spot.

Two InterContinental hotels have already launched their strawberry dessert buffets, with different concepts.

The Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas presents the Strawberry Gourmet Boutique promotion featuring a course meal with delicacies along with semi-buffet styled strawberry dessert at the Lobby Lounge. The weekend-only promotion is available until March 31.

Like the Grand Walkerhill, it also runs a six-course meal that features delicacies including foie gras, caviar and truffles.

The desserts include strawberry Saint-Honore, strawberry cannele bordelaise and red crumble choux.

The InterContinental Seoul COEX presents its traditional authentic strawberry dessert buffet at the Lobby Lounge on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until March 31 and it serves more than 30 items, including strawberry souffle, strawberry tart and strawberry brownie among others.

The Sheraton Seoul D Cube City Hotel opened its strawberry season on Dec. 1 with its "All About Strawberries."

The all-you-can-eat dessert buffet allows guests to enjoy 20 different desserts such as strawberry pistachio cake and strawberry coco tart at the Lobby Lounge Bar on the 41st floor. Plus, there are a selection of fresh fruits and 13 side dishes, including spicy tteokbokki, tuna tataki and chorizo.

The promotion will be available until April 30 every Friday to Sunday.

The JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul launched its fourth edition of the Salon de Strawberry in mid-December.

This time, the promotion is in collaboration with American iconic fashion doll Barbie that marks its 60th anniversary in 2019.

Since it was launched in 2015, the hotel's strawberry promotion has drawn attention thanks to its social media-perfect, pink decorations at The Lounge that is adorned with Barbie dolls this time.

To begin with raw strawberry, its menu features strawberry roll cake, strawberry custard cream, strawberry tiramisu and chocolate-covered strawberry cupcake.

The promotion will continue until May.

The Lotte Hotel Seoul has returned with its Must Be Strawberry promotion that will be available until April 21 at its lounge and bar Peninsula.

It offers 20 strawberry-featured desserts, including dacquoise, tart, macaroon and brownies.

The offer is only available on Saturday and Sunday.

The Courtyard Marriott Seoul Times Square Hotel is appealing to strawberry lovers with its relatively affordable promotion My Strawberry Farm.

Its price tag is modest, but it offers various strawberry desserts and snacks along with unlimited sparkling wine and strawberry cocktails.

It is scheduled to run till April 27 only on weekends.
