Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have introduced new displays for the digital signage market in a bid to take the lead in the rapidly growing sector.
The two Korean firms released the displays at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) ― the world's largest trade show for the digital signs industry ― which is being held in Amsterdam from Tuesday to Friday.
While the global TV market has shown flat growth, digital signs, a centrally controlled content distribution platform used to show messages, videos and images, has emerged as a cash cow for Samsung and LG.
Samsung has taken the lead in the market, as of the third quarter of 2018, with a 25.7 percent share, according to data from market researcher IHS Markit. LG is second with 12.9 percent.
The entire digital signs market in 2018 was estimated at 3.5 million units and is forecast to grow to 4.4 million by 2020, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
During the four-day show, Samsung is showcasing an 82-inch 8K QLED display that can show high-quality images. It has artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology that Samsung said would allow store owners and advertisers to produce 8K quality content at a lower cost.
"By introducing 8K in display signs, businesses can deliver impeccable picture quality to their audiences in a way that was previously not possible," said Kim Seog-gi, executive vice president of the firm's visual display business. "The 82-inch QLED 8K Signs is just one of the many industry-leading products we are excited to showcase at the ISE 2019."
The firm is also displaying the 292-inch The Wall 8K display. It has a slim and bezel-less design that Samsung said allows The Wall to blend well with its surroundings.
Samsung also showed off its Multi-Link LED HDR technology, which can turn any content into high-dynamic range quality to produce a wider, more vivid range of colors.

While Samsung has focused on showcasing its 8K technology, LG is highlighting OLED displays for commercial purposes. The OLED displays can emit light based on the electric current without a backlight unit, so manufacturers using this technology can produce slimmer and lighter displays.
LG introduced a transparent OLED display designed for retail and gallery environments. LG said actual products can be clearly seen behind the transparent display while video or images are shown overlaid in front of the object. The firm said the transparent displays were ideal for car showrooms.
LG also showcased various LED signage displays including Fine-pitch displays that can separate the power module from the screen for a streamlined installation and the 130-inch bezel-less Meeting Room LED display.
"The unique technology featured in LG's OLED and LED signs products allow us to deliver ultimate solutions to customers in various industries," Lee Choong-hwoan, head of the firm's information display business unit, said.
