North Korean media outlets intensified calls for "corresponding" measures, including sanctions removal, from the United States on Tuesday as their leaders are set to hold a second summit later this month.

"The U.S. should respect our leading and preemptive efforts and respond to them with corresponding practical action," Uriminzokkiri, a North Korean propaganda outlet, said in an article.

"Our stance to usher in a new future for global peace and security and open an era of cooperation between North Korea and the U.S. remains unchanged."

Tongil Sinbo, a North Korean propaganda weekly, also urged the U.S. to retract "unfair" sanctions on North Korea, saying that the nuclear issue will not be resolved if Washington continues to make "unilateral" demands.

"Many countries in the world are saying that it is appropriate that the unfair sanctions should be taken back as our republic has stopped nuclear and ballistic rocket launches for more than a year," it said.

"If the U.S., which is the very country that created the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula, continues to cling to its unilateral demands, the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula will not be resolved, ever."

North Korea's media outlets have made almost daily calls for Washington to ease or remove sanctions before the Feb. 27-28 summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump in Vietnam.

Since their first summit last June in Singapore, Pyongyang has demanded sanctions relief and other concessions in return for what it claims to be substantive denuclearization steps, but Washington has called for more concrete measures. (Yonhap)
