British electronics maker Dyson is aiming to open up the premium LED lamp market for household use here as the firm rolled out high-priced new LED lamps Tuesday.

As the firm has done with its bladeless fan and cordless vacuum cleaner, Dyson has been enjoying increasing popularity worldwide, selling its products with a higher price tag than its competitors.

This time, Dyson came up with fresh technology again for its Lightcycle Task Light LED lamps. The firm said the lamps can adjust the color temperature and brightness based on the time of day.

Simon Cross, a design lead in lighting and professional at Dyson, said the firm could come up with the technology, "utilizing the data of over a million satellite surveys that defined the light conditions of the Earth's atmosphere at different times of the day."

The lamps are priced between 660,000 won ($587) and 960,000 won ($854), depending on size. Dyson Korea said the lamps go on sale here starting Tuesday.

A 32-bit microprocessor continuously interprets the daylight data and transmits it to an optical driver for color adjustment that can be adjusted between 2,700 kelvins and 6,500 kelvins, Cross said. Kelvin is a scale for measuring the color temperature of light. Daylight generally has a color temperature of above 4,500 kelvins.

The Lightcycle Task Light lamps can be connected to mobile device app Dyson Link so the lamps provide optimal lighting depending on user age and natural lighting.

The arm of the lamps can be moved on three axes ― up and down, in and out and around. They come with two different models ― one 70.3 centimeters tall that can be used on desks or tables and a 140.7-centimeter one for floor-standing purposes.

With the new lamp products, Dyson said it will take the lead in the country's high-end lamp market.

"Currently, there is no estimated data for the country's business-to-consumer smart LED lamp market, but we didn't set up any commercial goal of our lamp products when we started to develop them," a Dyson Korea spokeswoman said.

"As we do when we launch a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer, we have been trying to introduce new and innovative technologies of Dyson for products that are used in our everyday lives."

However, the new lamp products were criticized as reporters at the conference felt the designs didn't match up to expectations.

In response, Dyson said the new lamps are designed for function, as the firm's founder James Dyson mentioned previously that "good design is about how something works, not just how it looks."
