Beautiful Thursday Concert Series: Dami Kim

In 2019, the Kumho Art Hall will be featuring a performer every Thursday to spread classical music culture in Korea. One of the upcoming performers is violinist Dami Kim, who started the violin at the young age of five. She attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the New England Conservatory in Boston. She has performed with various world-famous ensembles including the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Kim has also been an active member of Korea's KBS Symphony Orchestra as well as the Korean Symphony. At the concert, she will perform pieces by Schubert. Lee Taek-gi will be accompanying her on the piano.

Murray Perahia Piano Recital

Murray Perahia is an American pianist who has been performing for over four decades. He attended Mannes College where he studied conducting and composition. He won the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1972 and performed solo for the first time at the Aldeburgh Festival the following year. He has also been on tour worldwide in countries such as Mexico, Japan, and Australia. Perahia has recorded several albums and is currently working on recording the complete Beethoven Sonatas. On top of his multiple accomplishments, he was even recognized in 2004 by Queen Elizabeth for his noteworthy contributions to classical music.

Dynamic Duo is a Korean hip-hop group that debuted in 2004. The group includes rappers Choiza and Gaeko, who had been active in the music scene since young ages. After releasing their first album "Taxi Driver," the group rose quickly to fame and even established its own record label in 2006 named Amoeba Culture. The label currently manages several famous groups and artists such as Rhythm Power and Crush. Dynamic Duo has released almost 10 studio albums and multiple singles. They have also won a variety of prestigious music awards both domestically and internationally.

Maroon 5 Red Pill Blues Tour in Seoul

Maroon 5 is one of the world's leading pop bands. Led by Adam Levine, who has also established himself as a solo artist, the band consists of keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Jesse Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton and instrumentalist Sam Farrar. This combination of members first came out as Maroon 5 (previously known as Kara's Flowers) in 2001. Since then, the band has released six full studio albums as well as several live and compilation albums. It has also released many singles and collaborated with other world-renowned artists. As a group it has won many awards including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and several Grammy Awards. The band will be visiting Korea as part of its worldwide Red Pill Blues Tour.

Black: The 3rd ASTRO AROHA Festival

Formed in 2016, Astro is a K-pop boy band under the label Fantagio. The group debuted with its single "Hide & Seek" and has since then been popular with the Korean public. The six-member group includes Yoon San-ha, MJ, Moon Bin, Cha Eun-woo, Jin Jin and Rocky. For a group that only debuted three years ago, Astro has already made a strong impression in the Korean music industry with its long discography: seven mini-albums and seven digital singles. Last year, Astro went on its first tour, "Astro: The 1st Astroad." They have also won 10 music awards including an Asia Artist Award, a Seoul Music Award, and a Korean Culture Entertainment Award.

On Feb. 23, three artists Besweet, Azin, and Seolbom will be performing. Besweet is a folk singer-songwriter who began her career in 2007. She has released two studio albums, several singles and an extended play. Azin debuted in 2014 with her first album "So High," which was followed with the extended play "Developpe." She is recognized in the music industry as an up-and-coming indie artist. Artist Seolbom released her first extended play in November 2018, called "Dawn of the Pink Sea." The title of the concert symbolizes these three talented vocalists collaborating together for the first time.

'Hero'

Set in 1909 in Korea, "Hero" takes place at a time when the country was on the brink of being completely overtaken by Imperial Japan. The musical revolves around 30-year-old Jung-geun (played by Ahn Jae-wook, Jung Sung-hwa and Yang Jun-mo) who joins the Independence Movement. Another key character in the musical is Ito Hirobumi (played by Kim Do-hyung, Lee Jeong-yeol and Jung Lee-wook), who goes to the city of Harbin to meet with the Russian minister. After hearing of Ito's trip to Harbin, Jung-geun makes it his mission to assassinate Ito. He sees this as a prime opportunity to further the movement and achieve independence.

'Jekyll and Hyde'

Based on the novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson, this musical takes place in London in 1885. Dr. Jekyll is a famous scientist who will soon marry the love of his life, Emma. Dr. Jekyll performs an experiment in which he creates Mr. Hyde, his alter-ego and an evil version of himself. As time goes on, Mr. Hyde grows stronger and stronger, making it difficult for Dr. Jekyll to gain control of himself as well as his love life. When Mr. Hyde begins to murder people, Dr. Jekyll must do everything it takes to save those he loves from the monster he created. The cast will include musical stars Cho Seung-woo and Hong Kwang-ho in the titular dual role.

'The Lion King'

Disney's musical "The Lion King" will be at the Korean stage until March during its international tour. The musical is based on the original film, released in 1994. The musical adaptation hit Broadway for the first time in 1997 and became instantly popular. A team of legendary composers including Elton John, Tim Rice, Lebo M, and Hans Zimmer created the score for this production, contributing to its immense success. The music received critical acclaim from the New York Times, which claimed, "there is simply nothing else like it," and WWOR-TV deeming it as "a feast for the eyes and ears."

This French musical took to the stage for the first time in 2015 in Paris. It recounts the legend of King Arthur, one of the most renowned figures in European history. The story begins from the day that young Arthur pulls the magical sword Excalibur out of a rock and becomes king. While many pledge their allegiance to the new king, others oppose him, as Arthur was not born to nobility. Due to this opposition, war begins in the kingdom. It is up to King Arthur to show the world he is indeed the "Chosen One" and has a claim to the throne. During his battles, Arthur meets Guinevere and falls in love. The musical is a dramatic portrayal of both his adventures on the battlefield as well as his passionate love story.

Lee Won-kuk's Saturday Ballet Story

Every Saturday until the end of March, the Lee Won-kuk Ballet Company will be performing some of the world's famous ballets including "Carmen," "Sleeping Beauty" and "Chicago." The company was founded in 2004 by Lee Won-kuk, one of Korea's top danseurs who graduated from Chung-Ang University. Lee is also a former leading member of the Universal Ballet, the Kirov Ballet and the Romanian Ballet Company. The Lee Won-kuk Ballet Company performs over 150 performances a year and seeks to spread ballet culture within Korea.

Noise Basement is one of the oldest clubs in the Hongik University area and is owned by YG Entertainment Company.
