Throughout 2019

Every Saturday at 3 p.m., the National Gugak Center holds a performance showcasing traditional Korean music and dance. This series will take place all throughout 2018. Each week the series will exhibit the works of various gugak artists. Various performances throughout the month of February will include the piri, pansori and sanjo. There will also be a traditional fan dance at the end of the month.

Gugak Concert DaDam
National Gugak Center
Feb. 27

In 2019, National Gugak Center will continue its DaDam concert series in which members of the public can come in to discuss various aspects of traditional Korean music and culture with experts as well as enjoy performances by professional gugak musicians. On Feb. 27, reporter Kim Hwan-young will give a talk on the topic of love in Korea, especially how it was portrayed in traditional Korean culture. He will also be gifting audiences with his books, "Let's Talk About Korea" and "Humanities for CEOs."

The Essential Duchamp
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

A French-American artist, Marcel Duchamp was born in 1887 and worked with paint, sculpture and film mediums. He is known as one of the most prominent contemporary artists and drew inspiration from Cubism, Dada and conceptual art. To commemorate the 50th year since his death, the MMCA will host the exhibition The Essential Duchamp until April 2019. The exhibition will include many of his works such as "Fountain," "The Large Glass" and "Etant Donnes." The exhibition is a cooperative effort of the MMCA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

What Ought to Be Done? Work and Life
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea
Until April 7
Harun Farocki was a German artist who conveyed his critical views of the world through his films and other works using multimedia. Making a statement of how media and industrial technology have negative consequences on humanity, Farocki tried to restore rationality in a period of time he considered to be chaotic and beyond reason. Touching upon other aspects of society such as labor and war, he incorporated poetry into film to create a raw and honest opinion of the world. The exhibition will feature several of his major works including The Parallel I-IV series, "Interface" and "Workers Leaving their Workplaces."

Civilization: The Way We Live Now
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea
Until Feb. 19

This exhibition is the accumulation of over 300 works from 130 artists depicting human life in the modern world. The main medium of the exhibition is photography, and the MMCA will the first museum to feature the exhibition before it is shown at different museums throughout the world. The exhibition is split into eight sections, each of which pertains to a different aspect of society. Such facets include human relationships, power dynamics and conflict. The artists come from all different backgrounds. Korean artists featured include Noh Sun-tag and Kim Tae-dong. This exhibition is a collaborative effort by MMCA and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography. Tickets cost 2,000 won. Visit mmca.go.kr for more information.

A Grand Day Out by Aardman Animations

Featuring the works of Aardman Animations Studios, the creative company that made "Wallace & Gromit," "Flushed Away" and "Chicken Run," this exhibition will show the creative process behind these well-loved movies. The company first started in 1972 with Peter Lord and David Sproxton as its founders. By using puppet model animation techniques and making content for adult audiences, Lord and Sproxton expanded the creative boundaries of the film industry as well as animation production. The exhibition will feature many of their finished works as well as the processes behind the projects.

Pierre-August Renoir: Scent of a Woman
The Seouliteum

Pierre-August Renoir (born in 1919, France) is considered one of the leaders of the Impressionist movement. Throughout his career, Renoir changed the style and content of his paintings. His initial works involved snapshots of real-life situations and scenery. Later on, he adapted a more formal technique and used stronger lines rather than the vibrant colors he utilized in his early works. Renoir also focused on sensuality and intimacy: many of his subjects were nude women. Throughout his career, he produced several thousand paintings and his legend continues even posthumously.
For this particular exhibition, Scent of a Woman, many of these paintings will be featured with the goal to capture the essence of love through female sensuality. Previously held at the Bon Davinci Museum, this exhibition will be on display at the Seouliteum until next spring.

Dialogue in the Dark

A 100-minute artistic experience in pitch-black darkness, Dialogue in the Dark provides its visitors a new way of approaching the world. It hopes to disconnect visitors from other people and the outside world and create a unique space for each individual. The goal of the exhibition is to provoke thought without the traditional method of visual imagery. This exhibition first started in Germany in 1988. Throughout the past 30 years, it has been displayed all over the globe in 160 cities and has drawn the attention of over 10 million visitors. The exhibition is currently held at D.Space and will be on display indefinitely.

Pierre et Gilles
K Museum of Contemporary Art
Until May 26

Known for their hand-painted photographs, Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard are two French artists. They have been working together since 1976. Pierre is responsible for taking the portraits while Gilles adds the painted elements to create the unique pieces. Their works incorporate both daily life and elements of fantasy. Previous exhibitions were held at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. They have created works for several K-pop musicians including CL and TOP.

Dear My Little Prince

"The Little Prince" was first published in France in 1943. It is about a young prince and his diverse encounters and exciting adventures. The book received massive popularity and has been translated into 300 languages, being one of the most translated works of literature ever in history. It has even been adapted into several movies and other media forms. To once again celebrate the cultural significance of "The Little Prince," the K Museum of Contemporary Art has dedicated two floors to exhibiting related works of art. Various Korean artists such as Jeong Un-sik and Kim Jae-uk have collaborated to create this exhibition.

Loving Vincent
M Contemporary Museum

One of the most famous artists in history, Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter who created over 800 pieces in his life. He is known for his Post-Impressionist paintings, which were done with the technique of using multiple brush strokes. Portraits (of both himself and of others), flowers and scenery are some of the recurring subjects in his paintings. Many of such works will be featured at this exhibition. Additionally, visitors will be able to watch a painting show of a live artist and take part in a blue-screen simulator of the world of van Gogh.

Alice in Wonderland

This exhibition brings to life the world of Alice in the classic tale, "Alice in Wonderland." The exhibit features the Rabbit Hole, Mushrooms, the Interactive River, the Mad Hatter & Enigma of the Cat, and the UV Tunnel to name a few of the sections. The exhibition is interactive and allows its visitors to be physically immersed in Wonderland through the senses of sight, hearing, and touch. By combining physical and digital components, the exhibition uses multimedia to provide a new experience for visitors.

Kenny Scharf Super Pop Universe

Born in 1958, Scharf is an American painter who has been recognized for his contributions to pop art culture. He strives to "reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture." His extensive list of exhibitions and shows demonstrate the popularity of his vibrant and eye-catching work. For this exhibition, the featured series displayed will be Jetstone, Customizing, Cosmic Cavern and Karbomz.

Keith Haring
Dongdaemun Design Plaza
Until March 17

An American artist, Keith Haring was born in Pennsylvania. He had his first solo exhibition in 1978 and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York. Haring was inspired by various artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky and Andy Warhol. Although he experimented with various art mediums, he is most famous for his drawings and his pop-art pieces. His work depicts a wide variety of subjects from New York subways to societal issues such as homosexuality and other political themes. Haring passed away at the young age of 31 in 1990 from AIDS. Much of his work was dedicated to spreading awareness of AIDS and his legacy continues even posthumously.

Herge
Hangaram Arts Center Museum

Born as Georges Prosper Remi, Herge is a Belgian cartoonist who is most famous for creating "The Adventures of Tintin," a widely loved comic series. The series included 24 comic albums and first appeared in 1929 in a Belgian newspaper. It revolves around Tintin, a young reporter with an adventurous spirit, as he explores and goes on adventures. The series received love for its clean illustrations, comedic plotlines, and its subtle satire/commentary on politics and culture. The exhibition will have 10 rooms in total featuring the works of Herge as well as his life story.

The Children's Museum, located in the National Museum of Korea, is an activity-oriented museum where children can appreciate history. The museum exhibits reproductions of artifacts on display in the permanent exhibition hall so as to enable children to gain a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. Through the exhibition, children can learn about the ways of life and wisdom of people in ancient times through various experiential exhibits. The museum also provides educational programs that allow children to observe and touch cultural artifacts by themselves and develop their interest in history and culture.
