Samsung Display employees are carrying out a blood donation campaign this month in an effort to help resolve a blood shortage for emergency patients requiring blood transfusions, the company said Monday.

The blood donation campaign began on Feb. 13 at the Giheung Campus in Gyeonggi Province, where the firm's headquarters are located, as well as the Asan 1 Campus in South Chungcheong Province. Employees there participated in the two-day blood donation drive.

Then, the project will move to the company's Cheonan Campus in South Chungcheong Province Wednesday and to the Asan 2 Campus on Feb. 26.

Samsung Display said the firm has carried out the blood donation project every February as the blood supply shortage problem repeats in that month due to the vacation and national holiday season that reduces the participation of people in blood donation.

Since the project was first launched in 2013, about 16,500 employees of Samsung Display have participated in the blood donation.

The firm said 2,000 to 3,500 employees participate in the campaign every year.

"I have donated blood about 70 times so far since I began blood donation when I was 19 years old," said Lee Gyu-seob, an employee of Samsung Display. "I am giving consistent efforts to manage my health to continue participating in the blood donation. I think blood donation is the best way of managing health as you can check your health conditions."

An official from the company's social contribution unit said the firm carries out a blood donation campaign about three to four times every year.

"Blood collected through our campaigns is donated to the Korean Industrial Health Association's blood bank," the official said. "We will continue to carry out the campaigns and work to expand the participation of our employees to contribute to resolving the problem of blood supply shortage."

Samsung Display is the panel making unit of Samsung Electronics. It has recently developed the world's first ultra-high definition (UHD) organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for laptops, making its foray into the premium market for IT devices.

The display maker has been also redoubling its efforts to develop OLED technologies to expand its presence in the market for automotive OLED panels.
