A man who pretended to be a police officer to rape a young prostitute is now in custody, police said Wednesday.

Gwangju Bukbu police said the suspect, 28, allegedly raped the victim, 19, in a car in Bukgu, Gwangju, on April 29. They got to know each other through a dating app and met for "compensated dating" ― a term referring to prostitution in Korean internet communities.

When they met, the man introduced himself as an undercover cop and threatened to arrest her if she refused to have unpaid sex with him, according to police.

The suspect also attempted to extort 500,000 won ($420) from the girl in return for not reporting to police, they said. But the girl told police after finding him suspicious.

Police have sought an arrest warrant for the man.
