UNITED NATIONS (AP) ― The world's population is getting older and growing at a slower pace but is still expected to increase from 7.7 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050, the United Nations said Monday.
전 세계 인구가 느린 속도로 증가 및 고령화되고 있으며, 현재의 77억 명의 인구가 2050년에는 97억 명으로 늘어날 것으로 예상된다고 유엔은 월요일 밝혔다.
The U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Population Division said in a new report that world population could reach its peak of nearly 11 billion around the end of the century.
유엔의 경제사회사무국 산하 인구국은 새로운 보고서에서, 21세기가 끝날 때는 전 세계 인구가 110억 명으로 늘어날 것이라고 밝혔다.
But Population Division Director John Wilmoth cautioned that because 2100 is many decades away, this outcome "is not certain, and in the end the peak could come earlier or later, at a lower or higher level of total population."
하지만 존 윌모스는 유엔 인구정책국장은 2100년은 먼 미래인 만큼 예상이 정확한 것은 아니며, 인구의 정점은 이보다 빨리 오거나 늦게 올 수 있다고 경고했다.
The new population projections indicate that nine countries will be responsible for more than half the projected population growth between now and 2050.
새로 나온 인구수 예측 보고서는 9개 국가가 오늘날부터 2050년까지 인구수 증가의 주된 원인이 된다는 것을 보여준다.
In descending order of the expected increase, they are: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and the United States.
인구수는 인도, 나이지리아, 파키스탄, 콩고, 에티오피아, 탄자니아, 인도네시아, 이집트, 미국 순으로 증가할 것으로 예상된다.
In sub-Saharan Africa, population is projected to nearly double by 2050, the report said.
사하라 사막 이남의 아프리카에서는 2050년까지 인구가 거의 두 배로 증가할 것으로 예상된다고 보고서는 밝혔다.
Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Lu Zhenmin said in a statement: "Many of the fastest growing populations are in the poorest countries, where population growth brings additional challenges in the effort to eradicate poverty, promote gender equality and improve health care and education."
루젠민 경제사회부 차관은 성명에서 "인구가 빠르게 증가하는 곳 대부분이 빈곤국가로, 이들 국가는 빈곤을 없애고 양성평등을 촉진하고 의료 및 교육제도 개선을 위해 여러가지 문제들에 직면하게 될 것"이라고 말했다.
The report confirmed that the world's population is growing older due to increasing life expectancy and falling fertility levels.
보고서는 기대수명 증가, 출산율 하락으로 인해 전 세계 인구가 늘어나고 있는 것이 사실임을 밝혔다.
The global fertility rate fell from 3.2 births per woman in 1990 to 2.5 births in 2019 and is projected to decline further to 2.2 births by 2050.
전 세계 출산율은 1990년 여성당 3.2에서 2019년 2.5로 떨어졌고, 2050년에는 2.2로 하락할 것으로 예상된다.
A fertility rate of 2.1 births per woman is needed to ensure population replacement and avoid declines, according to the report.
보고서에 따르면, 현재의 인구수를 유지하기 위해서는 여성당 2.1의 출산율이 요구된다.
