Food waste collectors, road repairers, cleaners and other irregular workers in the public sector ― from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) ― pack Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul's Jongno District Wednesday demanding the central government upgrade their positions to regular occupations for job security. The mass sit-in by an estimated 60,000 workers began at 3 p.m. Hours before, some 40,000 irregular workers from schools nationwide under the KCTU protested at the same spot. They also demanded that all irregular public sector jobs become regular posts. About 7,200 police from 90 divisions nationwide were called in to monitor the situation.
