Scandal-hit Super Junior member Kangin is leaving the band in the wake of several assault allegations and drunk-driving cases since 2009.

Kangin made the announcement on social media Thursday. He has rarely joined recent band activities.

Despite a comeback in the web drama "What Happened to Mirae" after three years, netizens still showed negative reaction to the scandal-plagued star.

He posted a long letter on Instagram to E.L.F, the boy band's fandom: "I am planning to let go of my longtime title 'Super Junior.' I always had heavy hearts for other members. I always thought it should be done soon but I didn't have enough courage.

"Above all, I am so sorry for E.L.F. who gave me unconditional love for 14 years." He wished the remaining Super Junior members all the best.

Reactions varied on his post. Some international fans blamed the Korean E.L.F for not understanding and loving the artist, while other fans said loving someone unconditionally despite wrongdoings is unethical.

For his remaining contract with label SJ, Kangin is expected to take part in solo activities, mainly acting and singing.
