Hyundai Motor's smallest SUV, the Venue, has debuted on the Korean market, seeking to appeal to young customers looking for their first car with its strong external presence.
현대자동차의 소형 SUV '베뉴'가 강렬한 디자인으로 첫 차를 구매하고자 하는 젊은 고객들의 눈길을 잡기 위해 국내 시장에 데뷔했다.
The Venue, launched on July 11, is filling the missing piece in the auto brand's SUV lineup, which ranged from the flagship Palisade to the Kona. What was missing was a subcompact SUV, whose main targets are entry customers.
지난 11일 출시된 베뉴는 현대차의 주력 모델인 팰리세이드부터 코나까지 다양한 SUV 라인업에서 빠진 부분을 채우고 있다. 바로 첫 차 구매자들을 대상으로 하는 소형 SUV 세그먼트다.
"We developed the Venue in the hope for it to be a companion for those enjoying the single life," Hyundai Motor Executive Vice President Lee Kwang-guk said during the launch event in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
이광국 현대차 국내영업본부장 부사장은 경기도 용인에서 열린 신차 출시 행사에서 "싱글라이프를 즐기는 사람들의 동반자가 되길 바라는 마음에서 베뉴를 개발했다"고 말했다.
"Single-person households accounted for 29.2 percent of Korea's overall households last year and the ratio is growing quickly," Lee said. "We reflected this trend and young people's desire for independence by making the car look bold and highly customizable, while providing advanced safety features for less experienced drivers."
이광국 부사장은 "지난해 우리나라 전체 가구의 29.2%를 1인 가구가 차지했고 이 비율은 빠르게 늘고 있다"며 "이러한 트렌드와 젊은층의 독립욕구를 반영하여 개성 있는 디자인과 다양한 커스터마이징이 가능한 자동차를 만들었다. 동시에 운전 경험이 많지 않은 운전자에게 고급 안전 기능을 제공한다"고 덧붙였다.
The Venue is 4.04 meters long, 1.77 meters wide and 1.57 meters high, which Hyundai Motor says is the best size for the single lifestyle. Though being compact, the Venue wears Hyundai SUV family's grille and multi-piece headlamps, styling itself as a small but solid SUV.
베뉴는 길이 4.04m, 폭 1.77m, 높이 1.57m로 싱글라이프 스타일에 가장 적합한 크기라고 현대차는 말한다. 베뉴는 소형SUV지만 현대차 SUV 라인업 특유의 그릴과 멀티피스 헤드램프를 적용해 작지만 탄탄한 SUV로 스타일링했다.
The Venue is powered by Hyundai's new Smartstream G 1.6-liter petrol engine, coupled with either a manual or intelligent variable transmission. This combo creates up to 123 horsepower and 15.7 kilogram-force meter torque.
베뉴는 현대차의 신형 스마트스트림G 1.6L 가솔린 엔진과 수동변속기 또는 스마트스트림IVT(무단변속기)가 적용됐다. 이는 최고출력 123마력, 최대토크15.7 kg·m 를 만들어낸다.
Described as an "urban" SUV for entry customers, the Venue excels in efficiency rather than driving performance, boasting a fuel economy of 13.7 kilometers per liter.
첫차 고객을 위한 '도시형 SUV'로 불리는 베뉴는 주행 성능보다는 효율성이 뛰어난 차량으로, 리터당 13.7km의 연비를 자랑한다.
One of its strongest appeals was the various advanced driving assist features which were available at the cheapest model. Included were forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning and high beam assist.
베뉴의 강력한 셀링포인트 중 하나는 가장 저렴한 모델인 스마트트림에도 적용된 다양한 고급 운전 보조 기능이다. 전방충돌회피 보조, 차선유지 보조, 운전자 주의 경고 및 하이빔 어시스트가 포함됐다.
In return for making the advanced technologies as options, the Venue's interior was far from being fancy or stylish, telling as to how Hyundai could price this car ― automatic transmission ― at between 16.2 million won ($13,800) and 21.11 million won. The manual model starts from 14.73 million won.
고급 옵션을 추가 선택 사양으로 만든 베뉴의 화려하지 않은 내부는 현대차가 이 차를 어떻게 1,620~2,111만원이란 저렴한 가격을 매길 수 있는지 보여준다. 수동변속기 모델은 1473만 원부터 시작한다.
The Venue's launch heralds heated competition among subcompact SUVs in the domestic market. So far, the segment has been dominated by the SsangYong Tivoli, but rivals have rolled out or will launch strong contenders, including the Venue and Kia Motors' Seltos.
베뉴의 출시는 국내 시장에서 소형 SUV의 열띤 경쟁을 예고한다. 지금까지 이 세그먼트는 쌍용 티볼리가 장악했지만 경쟁사들은 베뉴와 셀토스를 포함한 강력한 경쟁자들을 출시했고 앞으로도 출시할 예정이다.
