Anorectic agents have been prescribed to one out of every 45 Koreans over the last 10 months, and 90 percent of those were women, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Tuesday.
화요일 식품의약품안전처는 최근 10개월간 한국인 45명 중 1명꼴로 식욕억제제를 처방받았으며 이들 중 90%가 여성이었다고 발표했다.
An anorectic is a type of agent that stimulates the brain to make a person feel full or less hungry.
식욕억제제는 뇌를 자극하여 포만감을 주거나 배고픔을 덜 느끼게 하는 일종의 향정신성의약품이다.
Some 1.16 million people or 2.2 percent of the total population were prescribed these appetite suppressants. People in their 30s took up 30.3 percent of the total.
전체 국민의 2.2%에 해당하는 116만명이 이러한 식욕억제제를 처방받았다. 이들 중 30대가 30.3%를 차지했다.
An anorectic agent is recommended to be taken alone for safety reasons, but 10 percent of the 1.16 million were prescribed more than one agent.
식욕억제제는 안전상의 이유로 다른 식욕억제제 성분과 함께 먹지 않는 것이 좋으나 116만 명 중 10%가 2개 이상의 성분을 중복해 처방받았다.
It is also advised not to be taken for more than four weeks but 30 percent had the medicine prescribed for longer periods.
또한, 식욕억제제는 4주 이상 복용하지 않아야 하지만 이들 중 30%는 이 약을 장기간 처방받았다.
Taking anorectics for a long period of time can cause side effects such as pulmonary hypertension and serious cardiac disorder. So the ministry issued a guideline for the safe use of the agents to doctors.
식욕억제제를 장기간 복용하면 폐동맥 고혈압과 심각한 심장질환 등 부작용 발생위험이 커진다. 따라서 식약처는 의사들에게 식욕억제제의 안전한 사용을 위한 가이드라인을 발행했다.
According to the ministry data, 4.97 million prescriptions of psychotropic drugs, which can also suppress appetite, were also given for medical purposes between last July and April this year.
식약처의 발표자료에 따르면 지난해 7월부터 올해 4월까지 식욕을 억제해주는 향정신성의약품 처방건수는 497만 건이다.
The number of patients who were prescribed the appetite suppressants was about 7.3 percent of 15.97 million patients who were prescribed psychotropic drug for medical purposes, including zolpidem and propofol which are used in treating insomnia.
식욕억제제를 처방받은 환자 116만명은 불면증 치료에 사용되는 졸피뎀과 프로포폴 등 전체의료용 마약류를 처방받은 환자 1597만명 중 약 7.3%를 차지한다.
