A new cafe where robots make drinks and desserts has opened in Seoul, but it is unlikely that automation will transform the nation's coffee culture.
로봇이 음료와 디저트를 만드는 새로운 카페가 서울에 문을 열었다. 하지만 자동화가 한국의 커피 문화를 바꿀 것 같지는 않다.
Robotics company T-Robotics held a launch event for the new robot cafe "Cafe.bot" on Wednesday in Seongsu-dong dubbed the "Brooklyn of Seoul," celebrating its first robot cafe in Korea.
로봇 자동화 전문 기업 티로보틱스는 수요일 '서울의 브루클린'으로 불리는 성수동에 국내 첫 로봇카페 '카페봇' 런칭 행사를 열었다.
The company has joined hands with exhibitor District Holdings to introduce a cafe packed with robotics technology and a series of exhibitions.
티로보틱스는 공간디자인 회사 디스트릭트홀딩스와 손잡고 로봇기술로 가득한 카페를 다양한 전시와 함께 선보였다.
Founded in 2004, T-Robotics has developed and commercialized a variety of performing robots, including vacuum cleaning robots, barista robots and many more.
2004년 설립된 티로보틱스는 청소 로봇, 바리스타 로봇 등 다양한 로봇을 개발해 상용화했다.
The company currently holds 35 patents, including eight overseas patents in the U.S., Japan, China and Taiwan.
이 회사는 현재 해외 특허 8건(미국·일본·중국·대만)을 포함해 35건의 특허를 보유하고 있다.
Inside Cafe.bot, a drip bot makes coffee and espresso drinks while a drink bot makes tequilas and cocktails. In addition, a dessert bot draws various emojis and designs on selected cakes.
로봇카페 '카페봇' 안에서 드립봇이 커피와 에스프레소를 내리고, 드링크봇은 테킬라와 칵테일을 만든다. 디저트봇은 손님이 고른 케이크 위에 다양한 이모티콘과 디자인을 그려 넣는다.
"The drip bot, unlike a human barista, knows the perfect formula for brewing coffee; it never goes wrong," a Cafe.bot official said.
카페봇 관계자는 "인간 바리스타와 달리 드립봇은 커피를 내리는 데 완벽한 공식을 알고 있다. 절대 실수하지 않는다"라고 말했다.
However, the robots don't allow owners to cut labor costs. The cafe still has four employees. The staff constantly operate the robots, receive orders and serve juice and cakes.
하지만 이 로봇들이 사장님의 인건비를 줄여주진 않는다. '카페봇'에는 아직도 4명의 직원이 있다. 직원들은 끊임없이 로봇을 작동시키고, 주문을 받고, 음료와 케이크를 서빙한다.
Despite novelty value, the robot barista has long way to go as it is not much faster than a human barista, nor does it function according to a voice command.
신기하다는 점을 빼면 로봇 바리스타는 인간 바리스타보다 그다지 빠르지도 않을뿐더러 음성 명령을 인식하지도 못하기 때문에 아직은 갈 길이 멀어 보인다.
