A successful K-pop competition was held in Osaka despite the trade war between Korea and Japan, a news agency reported Saturday.

According to Kyoto News, 800 fans packed the venue for the K-pop Cover Dance Festival Japan, in which 12 groups of 63 contestants from across the country competed to dance like their favorite K-pop groups, such as BTS and BLACKPINK.

A group of seven women from Kumamoto Prefecture won first prize ― and the right to compete at the K-pop Cover Dance Festival final in Seoul on Sept. 28.

The group's leader Juri Fujita, 16, said she hoped her group would win the grand prize. She also said the event would improve the relations between the two countries.

The K-pop Cover Dance Festival is an annual international competition hosted by the Seoul Shinmun Daily and sponsored by the Korean Culture Center and the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
