Changmin of K-pop boy duo TVXQ has donated 70 million won ($59,000) to support the fire-stricken Amazon forest, according to the Greenpeace Korea on Monday.
The environmental organization located in Seoul said he made the contribution to help the region recover and to carry out a field investigation.
"His donation would help save Amazon and let Koreans learn more about the rainforest destruction," a Greenpeace Korea official said.
Changmin's contribution came from the revenue he made with the "RE:MAX" project. In May 2018, he designed and sold environment-themed fashion items for donation purposes.
"The project aimed to bring our Earth back to the most beautiful state," he said.
Meanwhile, Amazon ― dubbed "the planet's lungs" for providing 20 percent of the Earth's oxygen ― has been burning since August. About 25,000 square kilometers of the forest was destroyed in a month, according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
TVXQ debuted as a quintet ― Yunho, Changmin, Junsu, Yuchun and Jaejoong ― in 2003 and rose to stardom with big hits including "Rising Sun" (2005) and "MIROTIC" (2008).
In 2010, Junsu, Yuchun and Jaejoong departed after a legal dispute with agency SM Entertainment.
But the duo has continued as TVXQ and recently performed in Taipei, Taiwan.
