Lionel Messi won the FIFA Men's Player of the Year award as beaten rival Cristiano Ronaldo stayed away from the star-studded ceremony in Milan's iconic La Scala Opera House on Monday.
월요일 이탈리아 밀라노의 라 스칼라 극장에서 열린 '더 베스트 피파 풋볼 어워즈 2019' 시상식에서 리오넬 메시가 크리스티아누 호날두를 꺾고 올해의 남자선수 상을 받았다.
Barcelona striker Messi's victory was a surprise as he edged out Virgil Van Dijk, who won the UEFA player's award last month after helping Liverpool to the Champions League last season.
바르셀로나 공격수인 메시는 지난 시즌 리버풀의 챔피언스리그 우승을 이끌어 지난달 UEFA 올해의 선수상을 받은 버질 반 다이크에게 근소한 점수 차이로 이기며 모두를 놀라게 했다.
Juventus forward Ronaldo had also been shortlisted for the award, but did not attend the ceremony as he was named in FIFA's World 11 best team along with Messi.
유벤투스 공격수 호날두도 메시와 함께 'FIFA 월드 베스트 11'에 오르며 올해의 선수상 후보에 올랐지만, 시상식에는 불참했다.
Both Messi, 32, and Van Dijk, 28, are now in the running for the coveted Ballon d'Or which will be announced on Dec. 2.
메시(32)와 반 다이크(28)는 12월 2일 발표될 발롱도르 수상을 위해 경쟁할 예정이다.
"I want to thank those who decided to give me this recognition," said Messi. "The most important thing for me is the collective awards, but today is also a very special night for me."
메시는 "저를 인정해주시고 이 상을 주신 분들께 감사드린다"라며 "내게 가장 중요한 것은 팀의 수상이다. 하지만 오늘 또한 나에게 있어 매우 특별한 밤"이라고 말했다.
It is the first time that Messi has won the FIFA Best Award which was created in 2016. Ronaldo won for 2016 and 2017, with Croatian Luka Modric beating both last year.
FIFA 올해의 선수상은 2016년 처음 생겼는데, 메시는 처음으로 이 상을 받는 영예를 얻었다. 2016년과 2017년에는 호날두가 2018년에는 루카 모드리치가 수상했다.
Messi was top scorer in the Champions League last season with 12 goals before Barcelona were dumped out by Liverpool in the semi-finals.
메시는 지난 시즌 챔피언스리그 최다득점자로 12골을 기록했다. 바르셀로나는 준결승전에서 리버풀에 패하며 결승 진출에 실패했다.
The Argentine also won the European Golden Shoe after scoring 36 goals, the La Liga title with Barcelona and helped Argentina to bronze at 2019 Copa America.
메시는 라리가에서 36골을 기록하며 '유러피안 골든슈'를 수상했을 뿐만 아니라, 아르헨티나의 2019 코파아메리카 3위를 이끌었다.
Van Dijk had been bidding to become a rare defender to win a FIFA player award, since Italian Fabio Cannavaro won the World Player of the Year, and he Ballon d'Or in 2006.
반 다이크는 수비수로서는 쉽지 않은 FIFA 선수상 후보에 올랐다. 이탈리아 국가대표 수비수 파비오 칸나바로가 2006년 올해의 선수상과 발롱도르를 수상한 전적이 있다.
