For most K-pop stars, the first few years after they debut is the most hectic.

To leap from obscurity and establish their presence on the K-pop scene ― where some 50 bands debut annually ― they initially strive to make as many public appearances as possible. Hence, fans were anxious and curious when rookie boy group Golden Child had a year-long hiatus, until its comeback on Monday.

But the 10 members were not merely chilling, according to rapper TAG. They have been polishing their vocal and dance skills, as well as gearing up for their first studio album "Re-boot." Although the members admitted they felt impatient during the first part of the break, they later focused on tuning up for the next release.

Now for Golden Child, its long-awaited return is a matter of life or death.

"We think of our comeback as a life or death bet," rapper Jangjun said during an album showcase on Monday at the YES24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. "I want to show our accomplishments with the fresh EP. My small wish is to have our tracks enter the music streaming charts, but to be more ambitious, I hope we can win the music shows and receive a grand prize (at award ceremonies.)"

Golden Child ― comprising Daeyeol, Jibeom, Jangjun, Bomin, TAG, Donghyun, Y, Seungmin, Jaehyun and Joochan ― has been clinging to a vibrant image since its debut in 2017. But as the new album's title implies, it has been literally "rebooted." All members ditched the bubbliness and have returned with charisma and maturity.

"Brightness goes well with our members, but I have been thinking sexiness and urbaneness would suit them too," front man Daeyeol said. "I am delighted to see us display these aspects this time."

Fronted by lead number "WANNABE," the album contains 11 B-side songs. They include the intro track "Re-boot," the mawkish "Lately," the electronic-pop "Compass," the future-bass sounding "No Matter What," Joochan's solo track "A Song For Me," the heart-warming "Spring Again," the retro-flavored "Our Heaven," Y's solo number "Fantasia," the poetic "Don't run away," and the British pop ballad "Go Together."

Regarding "WANNABE," lead vocalist Joochan said its title had a dual meaning.

"Our 'wannabe' can either be ourselves or somebody else," he said. "In the song, we long to reach someone ideal, but at the same time, hope to go beyond ourselves."

The youngest member Bomin, who has been forging an acting career as well, said: "The number taught me about masculinity. As I practiced for the track, I distressed over the elements of a real man."

Daeyeol wrapped up the event by disclosing the group's determination.

"Through the album, we will exhibit how Golden Child has transformed and grown up," he said. "We will also strive to become a wannabe for many people."
