Freezing weather gripped the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, plunging temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas and forcing several provinces to issue cold alerts.
The cold snap is forecast to rage through Wednesday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. Snow is expected in Seoul and central areas on Sunday, it said.
While Seoul's morning low reached minus 6 degrees Celsius, the lowest this year, that of Gimhwa-eup, in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, hit minus 15.1 degrees. It was minus 13.5 degrees in the mountain pass Daegwallyeong and minus 10.2 degrees in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
Islands in the East Sea had heavy snow of more than 10 centimeters. As of 2 p.m., Ulleung and Dokdo islands had 10 centimeters of snow and are expected to receive 15 centimeters more by Wednesday afternoon.
Jeju Island had up to 17 centimeters of snow.
