Hyundai Motor's luxury brand Genesis was named the most reliable brand in J.D. Power's 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study, which evaluates three-year-old vehicles in the U.S. market, the car ratings firm said Thursday.

The study measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles experienced by the original owners of their three-year-old vehicles during the past 12 months. A lower score reflects higher quality. Genesis began U.S. sales in August 2016 and this is the first time it has been evaluated.

Genesis scored 89 points, while Lexus registered 100 points, Buick 103 and Porsche 104. Lexus was the top brand in last year's study.

The 2020 study measured 36,555 vehicles from 32 brands ― including 13 luxury brands ― sold between July 2016 and February 2017. It covered 177 specific problems grouped into eight major vehicle categories.

The study also recognized the Genesis G80 as the most dependable vehicle in the midsize premium car segment.

"Dependability of a vehicle is a determining factor for residual values and second-hand prices," a Genesis official said. "We believe the study will help improve Genesis' brand value and sales."

Genesis was named the top brand in the J.D. Power 2019 Initial Quality Study (IQS), which evaluates new vehicles. Genesis logged a score of 63 problems per 100 vehicles, finishing first both in the premium segment and the industry overall in last year's ratings.

"Genesis was named as the top premium brand in the J.D. Power IQS for three years in a row, showcasing its quality in the highly competitive U.S. market," Genesis Global Head Lee Yong-woo said. "Along with initial quality, Genesis is now recognized for its dependability and we will spare no effort to keep this momentum and meet customers' expectations."
