Samsung Electronics has so far managed to weather the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, with its second-quarter operating profit estimated to have reached 8.1 trillion won, up more than 20 percent from the same period last year.
삼성전자는 올해 2분기 영업이익이 지난해 같은 기간보다 20% 이상 증가한 8조1천억원에 달하는 것으로 추정되며, 코로나바이러스 대유행의 여파를 어느 정도 무사히 견뎌냈다.
Despite the severe impact of the coronavirus on mobile phone sales, industry officials said the preliminary earnings report isn't surprising as the pandemic is accelerating a digital transition that is boosting demand for memory semiconductors for corporate servers. Samsung is the world's largest supplier of both DRAM and NAND flash-type memory chips.
코로나바이러스가 휴대전화 판매에 미치는 심각한 영향에도 불구하고, 업계 관계자들은 바이러스의 대유행이 디지털 전환을 가속 시키고 있고, 이로 인해 기업용 서버의 메모리 반도체 수요가 증가하고 있어 잠정실적 발표는 놀라운 일이 아니라고 밝혔다. 삼성은 세계 최대 D램과 낸드플래시 메모리칩 공급사다.
In the company's preliminary earning's report, the company is expected to report earnings of 8.1 trillion won ($6.7 billion) for the April to June period, a 22.7 percent increase from 2019.
삼성전자의 잠정실적 발표에서 동사는 4월부터 6월까지 2019년 대비 22.7% 증가한 8조1천억원의 영업이익을 발표할 것으로 예상된다.
"There has been a rise in sales of the server and PC chip sector due to the drastic increase in contactless environment measures," an official from Samsung Electronics said.
삼성전자 관계자는 "비대면 조치가 대폭 늘면서 서버와 PC용 칩 부문의 판매가 상승했다"고 말했다.
Despite weak smartphone sales, the emerging need for contactless options that allow people to work from home, take online classes, participate in video conferences and play games has increased semiconductor demand, especially in the server and PC sector.
스마트폰 판매가 부진하지만, 재택근무를 하고 온라인 수업을 듣고 화상회의에 참여하고 게임을 할 수 있게 하는 ‘비대면 방식'의 필요성이 대두되면서 서버와 PC 부문을 중심으로 반도체 수요가 증가했다.
