Big Hit Entertainment, home to K-pop juggernaut BTS, will join forces with Universal Music Group (UMG) to create a new boy band through an audition program.
K팝 거물 방탄소년단의 소속사 빅히트엔터테인먼트가 유니버설뮤직그룹(UMG)과 손잡고 오디션 프로그램을 통해 새로운 보이그룹을 탄생시킬 계획이다.
The announcement was made during the two companies' online press conference held Thursday morning (KST). The event was attended by Big Hit CEO/Chairman Bang Si-hyuk; Big Hit Global CEO Lenzo Yoon; UMG CEO/Chairman Lucian Grainge and Interscope Geffen A&M Records CEO John Janick.

Geffen Records is UMG's label which was behind the success of big-name artists including Elton John and Nirvana.

Big Hit and Geffen Records will set up a joint venture based in Los Angeles to launch the new boy band. They are also slated to team up with a media partner in the U.S. to produce an audition program through which the members will be selected. The show is expected to go to air in 2022.
빅히트와 게펜레코드는 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 합작회사를 설립하여 새로운 보이그룹을 출범시킬 예정이다. 그들은 또한 미국의 미디어 파트너사와 팀을 이루어 멤버들을 선발할 오디션 프로그램을 제작할 예정이다. 이 쇼는 2022년에 방송될 것으로 예상된다.
The new act will debut in the U.S., but follow the K-pop system in terms of music, performance and fashion, among others, Big Hit said in a statement issued later Thursday.
빅히트는 목요일 오후 발표한 성명에서 "이 새로운 그룹은 미국에서 데뷔하지만, 음악, 공연, 패션 면에서 K팝 시스템을 따를 것"이라고 전했다.
K-pop fans are divided over the news.
K팝 팬들은 이 같은 소식에 대해 의견이 분분하다.
"Portfolio diversification is important for any company," a fan wrote on internet community. "I am thrilled to see the new faces."
한 팬은 "포트폴리오 다양화는 어떤 회사든 중요하다"며 "새로운 얼굴들을 보게 되어 매우 기쁘다"고 인터넷에 글을 올렸다.
Another commented: "I hope Big Hit takes better care of the existing groups instead of churning out new bands one after another."
또 다른 팬은 "빅히트는 새로운 그룹을 만들지 말고 기존 그룹들을 더 잘 돌보기를 바란다"는 의견을 올렸다.
