The United Kingdom and Korea for the first time will hold a joint conference on connected and automated mobility (CAM) in Seoul, Oct. 27.
The British Embassy in Seoul said last week it will co-host the conference at the Millennium Hilton Seoul with the Korea Society of Automotive Engineers, Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers, Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences and Telecommunications Technology Association, all Seoul-based institutions, to discuss how the two countries can work together on developing self-driving vehicles.
CAM involves robotics, internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computers and high-speed wireless technology.
The participants will share thoughts on various technological and social challenges related to public regulation, legislation, communication and computing infrastructures, validation of CAM and mobility services.
"Connected and automated mobility has the potential to make our streets safer and cleaner, while reducing congestion on our roads and increasing jobs for the future," U.K. Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said. "I'm delighted to join colleagues from the Republic of Korea, as we work together to turn technological potential into transport reality."
British Ambassador to Korea Simon Smith noted the scale of the challenge in the global automotive sector is "such that no one company or country has all the answers."
He added, "Collaboration and partnership will be essential for the development of future mobility."
Hong Seong-soo, a Seoul National University professor and a KSAE member, expects the conference "will help the audience better understand the technical competence, policies and service deployment strategies of the two countries, and promote international collaboration in the CAM industry."
