KT CEO Ku Hyeon-mo has been appointed as a new board member of the Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) in recognition of the company's contributions to the development of the telecommunications industry, according to the mobile carrier, Tuesday.

Packed with top executives from global telecommunications firms, the GSMA board is seen as the top decision-making body in the industry. Other than KT, major carriers including AT&T, Verizon, Orange and Telefonica take part in the organization. KT said Ku has joined the board with a term of two years.

"Ku has been appointed as a new board member as the GSMA has recognized KT's digital innovation capability in 5G, AI and big data and its contributions to the global telecommunications industry," KT said.

"An official of the GSMA board said the GSMA expects KT will lead the global cooperation among operators with its digital innovation effort beyond its network business and leadership in platform business."

CEO Ku was quoted as saying in a press release, "I am glad to be appointed as a GSMA board member. During the next two years, KT will try to lead innovation in platform businesses such as 5G, AI and media content and the business-to-business sector to upgrade KT's status in the global arena and development of Korea's network business."

In regard to appointing new board members, GSMA Director General Mats Granryd said, "we thank the GSMA Board for its exceptional support during what has been a challenging year. The Board's insight, direction and support were integral as we navigated difficult decisions."

KT had been a member of the GSMA board from 2003 to 2018 and has joined the body's events such as the MWC, GSMA, Leadership Group and AI Imitative. The GSMA director general welcomed KT rejoining the board and added the Korean company is expected to play a leading role in the board members' activities.
