SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho is pioneering new ways of working at the telecommunications giant.
The company has set up offices throughout Seoul to offer employees more places they can work from, in addition to the existing office in central Seoul and their homes.
The new offices are located in Jongro, Seodaemun, Bundang and Panggyo. As the offices are dispersed throughout the city and in neighboring Gyeonggi Province it keeps commute times to below 20 minutes for employees. Park said this reduces carbon emissions, which brings down pollution levels.
"Because we cannot return 100 percent to how things were in the past, we need to look into how we can develop the ways we work and communicate. We will attempt a way of working freely regardless of time and place with the data and technology we have accumulated," Park said in a meeting with executives and employees, Tuesday.
"We are initiating a Work Anywhere campaign so that even after COVID-19 ends, all employees can work anywhere whether it is their home, the office, or at regional offices," he said.
According to SKT, 100 to 200 employees are utilizing the new offices every day. The company plans to keep adding new offices, based on demand from employees.
"With Work Anywhere, an employee based in Busan can be part of a team at the headquarters in Seoul," Park said. "It will enable employees who need to be stationed overseas with their family or others that reside overseas, to work for us without having to come to Korea."
Park also appointed a 32-year-old employee who has been with SK Telecom for less than three years as the project leader of the Work Anywhere initiative.
The appointment reflects the management's intentions to put young employees in charge of key decisions and thereby accelerate innovation.
The meeting with executives and employees, which was held both offline and online, is an attempt by Park to better share the company's policies in management and openly discuss ideas.
Park said the Work Anywhere initiative was launched after it was discussed at an online meeting in June. The CEO said he will continue to accept various opinions from employees via email or at such meetings, to encourage a culture of open discussion.
