The second season of TV Chosun's smash-hit trot audition program for female performers, "Miss Trot for Tomorrow," will premiere on Dec. 17, the cable channel said Wednesday.

Some 20,000 people applied for the show, according to TV Chosun, but it is unclear how many will be selected.

"Talented contestants will show off their charms on the show," the network said. "The crew that created the trot boom in Korea will once again make full use of their knowledge for 'Miss Trot 2.'"

Trot singer Jang Yoon-jeong and singer/musical actor Kim Jun-su are among the judges, with the top six contestants from "Mr. Trot" ― the follow-up program to "Miss Trot" ― set to appear as "special judges."

Trot is a Korean music genre characterized by its unique vocal inflections and repetitive rhythms. It was once thought of as a style mostly for the older generation, but following the success of TV Chosun's trot audition programs, it has gained immense popularity nationwide, even among young people.

The new season is the cable channel's third. It launched the first season of "Miss Trot" in 2019 and premiered "Mr. Trot" in January. Thanks to the programs' success, the winners ― Song Ga-in and Lim Young-woong ― and some other top contestants were catapulted to fame.

"Mr. Trot," in particular, wrapped up with 35.7 percent viewership in March, setting a a new ratings record for entertainment programs on cable channels.
