Actress Cho Yeo-jeong, who won the hearts of global audiences playing the lovely, naive wife in a rich family in the Oscar-winning film "Parasite," is returning to the small screen with a completely different character ― a reserved mystery writer ― in the new series "Cheat on Me, If You Can."

"My character has this intimidating aura that gives the vibe, 'if you mess with her, your life will be in danger,'" Cho said at Wednesday's online media conference for the show.

The comedy-thriller series revolves around best-selling writer Yeo-joo and her husband and famous divorce lawyer Han Woo-sung (Ko Jun), who wrote a pre-nuptial agreement that if he cheats, he dies. Despite the contract, Woo-sung has secret love affairs that start to haunt him later.

Cho's character is bizarre, to say the least. She grows deadly plants in her garden and researches different ways to kill a person for her crime novels.

"I have a cold-hearted side to me, but I usually try not to bring it out. But Yeo-joo, on the other hand, is not afraid to show it explicitly. That's why I find this character interesting," she said, adding that she was attracted by the resemblance to her own dark side.

Ko said Cho was one of the biggest reasons he decided to take the role.

"When I finally had to decide whether to take the role or not, Cho's casting helped me in making my decision," he said. "I dare say, out of all the actresses I've worked with, I had the best chemistry with her."

The series is written by Lee Sung-min, who wrote the comedy series "Queen of Mystery." It is directed by Kim Hyung-suk, the producer of the romance series "Oh My Venus."

Director Kim said this series is more than just about marital infidelity. "The story involves affairs but it unravels in such an unrealistic setting that it will bring out the comic part of the series," he said.

Adding that this mixed-genre series ― comedy, romance, thriller, and mystery ― was also a challenge for him, he said watching this drama will be like "getting a variety gift basket."

"Cheat on Me, If You Can" airs Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.
