The Korea Times appointed 20 university students as its first brand ambassadors, to raise awareness and better promote various events and forums the newspaper hosts.

A welcome ceremony took place at the paper's office in central Seoul, Friday, during which Korea Times President-Publisher Oh Young-jin awarded the students certificates recognizing their participation.

"I am sure all of you will become great brand ambassadors for The Korea Times for the next five months, so that the newspaper can get closer to young people," Oh said. "I also hope you will have the opportunity for self-development while serving as our brand ambassadors."

The 20 students were selected out of 83 applicants. The Korea Times originally planned to select 12, but chose eight more, as many excellent students applied for the program.

The 20 brand ambassadors will be offered the chance to participate in a variety of events and forums hosted by The Korea Times until the end of July.

They are tasked with becoming student journalists and in promoting the events by making the most of their social media accounts.

Team missions were suggested as well ― the brand ambassadors have been tasked with giving team presentations about their ideas for the newspaper's marketing activities in the rapidly changing media environment, May 21, as well as putting forward ideas for re-innovating the newspaper to better reach out to Generation Z, July 30.

Generation Z refers to people born after the mid-1990s and is called the most internet-dependent generation.

Kim Min-yong, 23, who studies at the Division of Chinese Foreign Affairs and Commerce of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, said, "I will actively engage in promotional activities for The Korea Times," vowing to utilize the experience he built while serving as a department representative and leader of a club at his school.

For her part, Kim Won-bin, 23, who studies at the Department of Communications and Media at Ewha Womans University, said, she applied to the ambassador program to contribute to raising the newspaper's brand awareness and influence.

"The Korea Times' reputation has grown over the years. By participating in the newspaper's various events and becoming a student journalist, I will be able to get experience and knowledge that I can never learn at school," she said.

Two outstanding brand ambassadors will be selected afterward to be awarded special prizes and the chance of a summer internship at The Korea Times.
