LG Uplus is increasing the number of "enjoyable" immersive content to attract more consumers to its fifth-generation (5G) network service.

The mobile carrier said Sunday that it has developed content based on cultural heritage items of the ancient Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-660 A.D.), utilizing its 5G network on the 28-gigahertz (GHz) band. The region containing the kingdom's relics is called as the Baekje Historic Areas and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

For the project, the company recently signed an agreement with Buyeo County and Gongju City, where the palaces of the Baekje Kingdom were located, and the Chungnam Information Culture Technology Industry Agency to develop augmented reality (AR) technology-based cultural heritage content.

This is a part of projects the Cultural Heritage Administration is pushing forward by allocating a budget of 4 billion won ($3.5 million).

"The project was initiated to promote the Baekje Historic Areas, which was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and to let more people know the value of the site through emerging technologies such as 5G network-based media art," the company elaborated.

Starting in July, LG Uplus will install what it calls a 5G 28GHz Experience Zone at cultural heritage sites such as Jungnimsa Temple where the Baekje Five-story Pagoda, Korea's National Treasure No. 9, is located, to offer visitors a chance to enjoy immersive content using AR glasses.

To let more young people know about Korea's heritage, LG Uplus also plans to produce entertainment programs where idol groups introduce cultural relics and sites in Gongju and Buyeo, joining hands with the Chungnam Information Culture Technology Industry Agency.

LG Uplus said this project could also become a good point of reference to export its 5G-based technologies to other countries where the super-fast network service will be increasingly adopted.

"We expect that our network and content-creating technologies could contribute to make Gongju and Buyeo emerging attractions for travelers," Choi Yoon-ho, vice president of the company, said.
