Indigenous surface-to-air guided missiles to be deployed this year

Korea will deploy indigenous surface-to-air guided missiles by the end of this year as testing has been successfully completed, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Thursday.

"The Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (DTaQ) successfully conducted the quality certification firing of the Cheongung in late July," said the DAPA in a press release. "Mass production will begin in earnest this year following the completion of the quality-certification process."

A DAPA official noted that the product receives a pass mark if it hits its target twice out of three test-fires.

Cheongung, the medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, was developed in 2011 by LIG Nex1 to replace the Air Force's aging hawk missiles in order to beef up the nation's air and missile defense.

Cheongung can intercept targets at an altitude of up to 40 kilometers and at a range of about 40 kilometers.

"Cheongung can be fired even in a harsh environment with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius and a low of minus 30 degrees Celsius, as well as in the face of electromagnetic waves," LIG Nex1 said in a statement.

The DTaQ said the latest quality certification firing proves the excellence of Cheongung.

"The successful quality checking of Cheongung will be a good opportunity for the nation's development of guided weapons in the future," it said.

For his part, Air Force Col. Dang Byung-gyu, who is in charge of the medium altitude guided weapons project at DAPA, said his agency will do its best to make Cheongung a masterpiece so it can contribute to building military strength.

DAPA said that it created a task force consisting of officials of the DTaQ, the Air Force and LIG Nex1 as well as relevant experts to carry out the latest test-firing.

Cheongung was recognized for its excellent performance while undertaking a number of test-firings under a variety of conditions.

In 2012, the government said it was the best achievement of its weapon development program.

1개 발사대당 8기 유도탄 탑재…수초간 단발·연발사격 가능

적 항공기 격추용 중거리 지대공유도무기 '천궁(天弓)'이 품질인증사격에 성공해 본격적으로 양산 단계에 들어간다.

방위사업청은 30일 '최근 국방과학연구소(ADD) 안흥시험장에서 올해 배치 예정인 천궁 최초 생산품의 품질인증사격을 성공적으로 실시했다'고 밝혔다.

품질인증사격은 무기가 개발 단계에서 보인 성능을 양산 단계에서도 그대로 발휘하는지 확인하는 절차다. 이번 품질인증사격에서는 올해 말 군에 납품될 예정인 첫 생산품이 발사됐다.

방사청은 '천궁의 품질인증사격을 성공적으로 완료한 만큼, 올해부터 본격적으로 양산 체제에 돌입할 것'이라고 설명했다.

LIG넥스원에서 개발한 천궁은 공군의 노후한 '호크'를 대체할 중거리 지대공유도무기로, 2011년 국내 기술로 개발하는 데 성공했다.

천궁은 교전통제소와 3차원 위상배열레이더, 수직 발사대 등으로 구성됐다. 특히 유도탄은 탄두에 레이더와 관성항법장치(INS), 탐색기(시커), 지령수신기가 있고 후미에는 고체 로켓 추진기관과 조종 날개를 갖췄다.

최대 사거리는 40㎞에 이른다. 고도 40㎞ 이하로 접근하는 적 항공기와 미사일 요격에 동원된다.

1개 발사대 당 8기의 유도탄을 탑재해 하나의 발사대에서 수초 간의 짧은 간격으로 단발, 연발 사격을 할 수 있다. 여러 대의 레이더 기능을 하나의 레이더로 통합한 3차원 위상배열레이더는 모든 방향에서 접근하는 수십 기의 적 미사일도 동시에 탐지 추적할 수 있다.

LIG 넥스원 측은 '최고 36℃, 최저 영하 30℃의 혹독한 환경과 세찬 강우, 전자파 교란 상황 등에서도 발사할 수 있다'면서 '고속·고기동 능력을 발휘해 회피 기동하는 표적을 정확히 요격하거나 다수 표적에 대해 동시 교전할 수 있는 능력이 있다'고 말했다.

천궁은 개발 단계에서 다양한 조건의 사격시험을 통과해 우수성을 인정받았으며 2012년에는 정부 연구개발 최우수 성과에 선정됐다.
