Former President Park Geun-hye has decided not to vote in the upcoming May 9 presidential election, correctional services authority said Sunday.

According to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province and the National Election Commission, Park was not included among 976 of 3,100 detainees there who seek to cast a ballot in a booth scheduled to be set up on the facility premises.

According to media reports, Park would not want to stand in a long line to cast a vote with many other inmates staring at or talking about her in the process.

Her longtime friend and confidant Choi Soon-sil, the central figure in the influence-peddling scandal that removed Park from office, signed up to cast her vote at the Seoul Southern Detention Center in Guro, Seoul, where she is currently being held.

Choi is among 624 out of 1,800 detainees there exercising their constitutional right.

According to the law governing electing public officials, she is allowed to vote because her trial hasn't ended. The preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
