LG Display has successfully developed the world's first 77-inch flexible and transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, the company said Friday.

The product is the Seoul-based company's latest achievement in large-sized OLED technology.

It came in collaboration with the government that envisions OLED as the future display technology.

"After opening the large-sized OLED TV market in 2013, LG Display has led the OLED industry and will continue to bring innovation to the market," Senior Vice President Kang In-byung said. "We pledge to provide differentiated value as a business bellwether."

According to the world's largest flat-panel maker, the new OLED display boasts ultra high-definition resolution and has 40 percent transparency.

In addition, the panel can be rolled up to a radius of 80 millimeters without affecting the display.

LG Display developed an 18-inch flexible OLED and transparent display in 2014, followed by an 18-inch rollable display in 2015. It continued to make significant progress in the area, revealing a 55-inch display with a 40 percent transparency rate.

During the past five years, the government has led a project of developing flexible, transparent displays larger than 60 inches.

The Seoul administration has been involved in the project to boost the country's competitiveness in the display business, in which China and Taiwan are striving to catch up with Korea.

Before becoming a dominant player in the big-sized OLED market, LG Display went through a series of challenges.

"When we decided to develop large-sized OLED panels, many opposed the idea. It was really tough to blaze the trail," said Kang, who is also chief technology officer.

"But such efforts have helped us keep ahead of the pack in the large-sized OLED market."
