A magnitude-7.1 earthquake in central Mexico killed at least 149 people Tuesday as buildings collapsed in plumes of dust, according to officials.

Volunteers and emergency crews were digging through the rubble of 29 collapsed buildings in Mexico City, according to municipal authorities.

Dozens of buildings fell and were severely damaged in a densely populated area of Mexico City and in nearby states.

Buildings collapsed at 44 places in the capital as high-rises across the city swayed, AP quoted Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera as saying. The quake came less than two weeks after another powerful quake caused 90 deaths in the country's south.

The overall toll rose steadily in the hours after the quake, according to the national disaster response agency CENAPRED, AFP reported.

Directly south of Mexico City, Morelos state suffered 42 of the deaths.

Thirty deaths were confirmed in the capital.

Puebla, a town southeast of Mexico City, registered 26 deaths, while Mexico State, to the west, had seven deaths.

Tuesday's disaster occurred exactly 32 years after a quake in Mexico City killed 10,000 people.
