Many salaried workers think that where they are first employed determines the rest of the career to come, a survey showed.

Job Korea, a job market information portal, surveyed 805 salaried workers around the country. Over half of them said that their first job has a strong bearing on their future employment.

''People think about their wages most in determining whether they will have good fortune in their career. How much money you get paid at your first job becomes a criterion in future salary negotiations,'' a representative at Job Korea said.

However, there was a discrepancy according to age. For those in their 20s who have just started work, 60.5 percent said the first job matters most, while the ratio fell to 41 percent among those in their 40s.

One out of three people said money was the most crucial factor in determining whether their workplace is good or bad. A further 25.6 percent said relations with coworkers mattered most, followed by benefit programs for employees.

Only 10 percent said whether or not the job suited their talents and aptitude mattered most.

Female employees were more likely to think about their relationship with their colleagues than their male counterparts, with 28.3 percent picking it as the most important criterion in evaluating their job. In the case of male workers, 22.8 percent said this mattered most.

One out of four people said they felt unlucky in their career if the company they work for faces worsening business conditions. They also felt bad when their bosses reprimanded them unreasonably or when they fail to be promoted. They also didn't like being compared to relatives or friends.

When asked how they would resolve the fact that they were working in an unsatisfying workplace, 45.6 percent said they would try to find another job.
