Six people drowned over the weekend as hundreds of thousands flocked to beaches or waterfront areas to beat the summer heat.

Three people drowned in a lake in Gangwon Province, on Sunday morning with details unknown.

A fisherman, 60, died in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, Sunday, after jumping into the water to free a snagged hook. A strong current is believed to swept the man away.

Wild waves carried away another man, 39, at Songjiho Beach on Sunday afternoon. His body was recovered.

Another man, 20, drowned at a beach in Samcheok, Gangwon Province.

"Even experienced swimmers find it difficult to escape from wild waves," said a water safety expert. "People should play or use a tube in shallow water."
