Opponents of shutting down cryptocurrency exchanges outnumber supporters, according to a survey. In the Realmeter survey, revealed on Friday, about 48 percent of 504 respondents object while 43 percent are in favor.

The government announced Monday that no decision has been made on the issue. Last week, the Justice Ministry disclosed its plan to close the exchanges, saying that Bitcoin and its ilk were speculative tools.

Up to 3 million South Koreans are investing in crypto-currencies, with Korea accounting for one-quarter of the global market in terms of transactions.

A different Realmeter survey shows 70.6 percent of respondents think President Moon Jae-in is doing a good job, down 1 percentage point from a week earlier.

The weekly survey involved 2,510 adults across the nation last week.

Even if the drop is attributable to the controversy over a government move to regulate cryptocurrencies, the correlation would be neither definite nor strong.
