Samsung Electronics hosted an artificial intelligence (AI) technology forum in Beijing, Thursday, showcasing what it calls the essential parts for the emerging technology.

The Korean tech giant's Device Solutions Division, which oversees the firm's chip business, said it held the inaugural Samsung Future Tech Forum, 2018 AI Solutions at the NUO Hotel Beijing. There, the firm displayed its semiconductor and display products that can be used in developing AI technology-related products.

Samsung said it held the forum to strengthen ties with Chinese firms dedicated to AI technology.

"Innovative technologies such as AI, fifth-generation (5G) networks, the internet of things (IoT), self-driving cars and blockchain technologies can fundamentally change our lives," said Choi Cheol, executive vice president and head of Device Solutions China regional office at Samsung during an opening speech. "We hope this forum can create cooperative opportunities between Samsung Electronics' high-tech products and the rapidly growing AI industry in China."

Samsung said this is the first time the firm has held an AI technology-focused forum in China. "We have held technology forums in China several times, but this is the first time Samsung hosted a forum dedicated to AI technology," said a Samsung official.

The AI forum featured some 500 officials from global enterprises such as Baidu, Xiaomi and Hikvision and AI technology-related startups in China.

Samsung introduced its high bandwidth memory-2 (HBM2) DRAM for use in supercomputers, AI and graphic systems; 16-gigabit GDDR6 DRAM for use in advanced graphics processing; mobile application processor Exynos 9 (9820); and its ISOCELL image sensors.

The firm's foundry division introduced its capability to manufacture customized chips using the 7-nanometer Low Power Plus (LPP) process that utilizes extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. Samsung Display also showed its OLED panels.

Choi said the Beijing forum was in line with the firm's Tech Forum 2018, which was held in Silicon Valley in the United States on Nov. 6. The forum featured 150 developers and designers at the headquarters of Samsung Research America.

During the Beijing forum, renowned tech gurus delivered keynote speeches to share the latest developments and future vision of AI technology. They were Larry Heck, senior vice president of Samsung Research America; Yin Shouyi, professor at Institute of Microelectronics at Tsinghua University; and Chen Tianshi, CEO of Cambricon, an AI chip startup in China.
