A middle school in Andong was locked down and 61 students and teachers taken to hospital after toxic formalin spilled in a lab, police said Wednesday.

The accident happened at 11:04 a.m. at Kyongan Middle School in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. Students accidently dropped a container of formalin to the floor and about a liter of the toxic chemical compound leaked.

Students and teachers in the lab evacuated immediately and school officials called in emergency services. The school was locked down while rescue workers cleaned up the spill and ventilated the building.

Some students suffered eye irritations or nausea. But there were no life-threatening issues, according to police and school officials.

An investigation is under way to find the exact cause of the accident.
