Korean celebrities are making donations to help people combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) that originated from Wuhan in central China and is sweeping the planet.

Actor Park Seo-joon donated 100 million won ($83,000) on Saturday to the Daegu branch of the Community Chest of Korea.

Daegu, South Korea's fourth largest city, is at the center of the coronavirus epidemic here. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had 500 confirmed cases. Some 77 percent are reportedly linked to the Shincheonji Church, a minor religious sect.

"After hearing news that Daegu lacks 'negative-pressure rooms' to isolate the patients and other essential medical equipment for treatment, the actor donated his money to help it purchase the equipment," the charity organization said.

Actress Lee Young-ae also gave a helping hand to the virus-hit city on Friday. Lee contributed 50 million won to the same organization.

"I made the contribution to help those who have been suffering economic hardship following the virus outbreak," she said. "I and my family hope Daegu people can overcome adversity."

Actress Kim Go-eun, singer Hyomin and TV personality Jang Sung-kyu also got involved in the philanthropy to curb the deadly virus.
