The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has selected 100 night spots and programs across the nation and will stage an active marketing campaign in cooperation with local governments to promote the nation's night tours to attract more foreign tourists.

The organization began the project in February in a bid to help the tourism industry ― which has been hit hard by the outbreak of COVID-19 ― recover at the earliest possible date, once the pandemic comes to an end.

The recommended spots included the stonewall walkway around Deoksu Palace and Banpo Han River Park in Seoul.

The Songdo Marine Cable Car (Busan Air Cruise) in the southern port city of Busan, and Suseong Lake in Daegu put their names on the list, while Sejong Lake Park in Sejong City and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, used by the Joseon kings from the reign of King Jeongjo (1776-1800), in Suwon of Gyeonggi Province were also included.

Others included a night tour program dubbed "Night of Jeonju and Heritage Story," run by Jeonju, North Jeolla Province.

In its research of the night tour content of each region, the KTO took advice from experts and officials at municipal administrations. It also analyzed big data related to the places people choose to visit in the evening, collected by SK Telecom's driving navigation platform T map.

The organization chose the final 100 night tour spots and programs in consideration of their attractiveness, accessibility and safety, among others.

The KTO said Korea is a good place for night tours because of its safe streets and 24-hour stores available nationwide.

Promoting night tours is expected to contribute to creating jobs and vitalizing the regional economy as tourists will be tempted to spend more time at tourist spots.

"We will actively promote the nation's night tour spots and content to attract more tourists during the nighttime. This will help boost the accommodation businesses of the regional economy," KTO official Ha Sang-seok said.
