SK hynix has started mass production of its new PE8110 E1.S solid-state drive (SSD) targeting the enterprise SSD market, the chip maker said Thursday.

After completing a self-certification process in March, the company will begin providing the new product to its customers starting next month.

The PE8110 E1.S is based on the company's 128-layer NAND flash memory technology. More layers mean better capacity with enhanced bit density.

Compared to its previous product PE6110, which is based on 96-layer NAND, the new product has 88 percent faster data reading and 83 percent faster data writing speeds, SK hynix said.

"The new product can store a 4-gigabyte full HD movie in a second. PE8110 8TB, which has the largest storage capacity at 8 terabytes among its new product lineup, can store around 2,000 movies on one SSD," the company said.

With the mass production of the PE8110 E1.S, the company has now secured a complete lineup of enterprise SSDs. Since the company developed the industry's first 128-layer 4D NAND flash memory in June 2018, it has produced three kinds of enterprise SSDs ― SATA SE5110, PCIe Gen3 PE8111 E1.L and PE8110 M.2.

As well as offering improved data reading and writing speed, the new product also has lowered energy consumption. "While SK hynix has significantly improved performance of its product, it also increased energy efficiency by keeping electricity usage the same as previous products, which means our new product is able to offer the best performance and capacity and lower energy consumption at the same time," it claimed.

"Through this mass production, we have a complete lineup of SSD products, which allows customers to replace their hard disk drives with SSDs," said Lee Jae-sung, senior vice president of the company.

Given SSDs have better energy-efficiency compared to HDDs, the executive added its new products could help customer companies respond to growing calls for improving environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) management.

"SSDs with low power consumption can reduce carbon dioxide by over 94 percent compared to HDDs, contributing to address environmental problems and helping customers strengthen ESG management," Lee said.

The enterprise SSD market is expected to grow to 28 trillion won ($25 billion) in 2024 with an average annual growth rate of 21.5 percent, according to data by market tracker International Data Corporation. To take a bigger slice of the pie in the high-potential market, SK hynix has been bolstering up its NAND flash memory chip business. In 2020, the company said it will acquire the NAND business of U.S. chip giant Intel for 10.3 trillion won.
