Hanwha Total has successfully completed the expansion of its polypropylene plant, which is set to drastically increase annual production.

The construction took 28 months injecting a total of 530 billion won ($472 million) to construct a new polypropylene plant and naphtha side cracker that could ramp up polypropylene production at Daesan, South Chungcheong Province, the company said, Wednesday.

The new polypropylene plant is capable of producing 400,000 metric tons annually, and with the help of the plant the total local production capacity reaches 1.12 million tons, with Hanwha Total taking over the title of the largest production capacity in the country. The company injected 380 billion won to build the polypropylene plant.

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic used for diverse industries in manufacture of high-value-added, durable goods for specialty applications such as underfloor heating pipes and automotive parts.

The demand for polypropylene has surged due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The naphtha side cracker, which cost the remaining 150 billion won, utilizes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to lower the production cost of ethylene. Hanwha Total's annual production capacity of ethylene also rose to 1.53 million tons from 1.38 million tons prior to the expansion.

"The completion of the construction of the petrochemical plant secured the nation's highest-quality polypropylene production capacity and concluded the large-scale investment project that had been underway for the past four years," a Hanwha Total official said. "We will focus on enhancing production efficiency and work to excavate future growth markets."
