Hanhwa Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn's youngest son Kim Dong-sun will compete in the dressage event as part of the Korean National Team during the Tokyo Olympics this year.

"Kim Dong-sun has qualified as an equestrian athlete to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. There are no regulatory problems for him to compete in the Olympics," the Korea Equestrian Federation said.

Kim has received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine as a prospective candidate for the Korean National Team to compete in the Olympics.

In January 2017, Dong-sun was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for two years for assault and did not qualify to be part of the Korean National Team until January this year.

However, the one-year postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19 has presented an opportunity for him.

The 32-year-old participated in international competitions in February and April this year in the U.S. and received a score that meets the requirements of the International Equestrian Federation to compete in the upcoming Olympics.

Kim is considered the top in the country in the dressage category.

Kim started riding at the age of 6 and was selected to take part in the Doha Asian Games in his high school years. He racked up three gold medals in the team category in the 2006 Doha, 2010 Guangzhou and 2014 Incheon Asian Games. He also received the silver medal in the individual competition at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and took part in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
