A record-high 450 firms were provided with government assistance in seeking a greater domestic market presence and overseas business opportunities at the Korea Public Procurement Expo 2021. The expo is being held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province from Wednesday to Friday.

The three-day annual event, organized by the Public Procurement Service (PPS), is the only public procurement fair where support for the expansion of excellent small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is provided.

This year's event seeks to create public demand for new high-tech products by incorporating public inquiries on the use of artificial intelligence technology, research-intensive products such as 3D printers, as well as goods made by startups, thereby bolstering innovation and growth at competent local firms.

The number of halls and booths at the fair has increased to include a display of virus containment-related products, such as COVID-19 test kits, along with a variety of other innovative goods.

Fifteen exhibition halls were set up to display products to help visitors understand the latest market trends, including electronic appliances, office equipment, machinery, and construction environment and safety equipment.

Alongside the event at the KINTEX, the PPS held an online meeting where 43 buyers from 17 countries, including the U.S. and Chile, offered one-on-one export consultations to 147 domestic companies seeking to expand their businesses overseas.

Last year's event was attended by 58 overseas buyers from 29 countries. Twenty international organizations and procurement authorities provided consulting services for 600 projects.

PPS Administrator Kim Chung-woo said that under his leadership, the agency will continue to help many innovative products from outstanding local SMEs enter the global procurement market.

"This year, the PPS policy drive seeks to prioritize increasing the purchase of innovative products made by budding startups with great potential, which in turn will help the country's innovation and growth. The Korea Public Procurement Expo continues to expand, and so will our capacity and experience to assist local businesses," he said.
