K-pop girl group puts out 2nd EP seven months after debut

By Dong Sun-hwa

NMIXX became a talk of the town immediately after making its debut in February, not only because it was a new group launched by K-pop powerhouse JYP Entertainment, but also because its debut track, "O.O," was unlike most other K-pop songs. "O.O" blended music genres like trap and Baile funk, sounding like a combination of two or three different songs. According to JYP, such a combination is the main characteristic of NMIXX's music style, "MIXX POP."

Although some people were critical of the tune for being too "convoluted and confusing," the singers, who dropped their second EP, "ENTWURF," on Monday, believe listeners will find their songs addictive once they play them.

"I think MIXX POP is very addictive," member Sullyoon said during a press conference at YES24 Live Hall in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul, Monday. The conference, which took place a few hours ahead of the EP's release, was the first in-person press event for NMIXX.

"Some people might have never listened to our songs, but nobody might have listened to them only once. They could sound confusing at first, but if people listen to them five times, they will soon fall under their spell," she added.

Leading the fresh EP is "DICE," which fuses the sounds of jazz, trap, pop and hip-hop. In this single, NMIXX members, who began their journey to "utopia" in their debut EP, "AD MARE," will continue their adventure despite the hindrance posed by a mysterious "antagonist." Its lyrics liken their journey to a dice game.

"With the tune, we try to show how we make our own destiny amid difficulty," leader Haewon explained. "When I first heard 'DICE,' I was overwhelmed by its sounds from the beginning … I hope our listeners feel the same, too."

The music video of "DICE" has surpassed 14 million views on YouTube as of Tuesday morning.

"ENTWURF" also carries another track titled "COOL (Your rainbow)" ― a pop ballad that compares people's emotions to different weather conditions.

"We highlighted our powerfulness in our debut EP, but this time, we also put emphasis on our sentimentalism through 'COOL,'" Haewon said.

Lily elaborated, "After wrapping up our promotional activities for our 'AD MARE,' we poured a lot of effort into preparing for our fresh release, so that we can showcase the best version of us. I think the quality of our songs are all high and we are confident about them."

Haewon said, "We will continue to work hard so that we can walk in the footsteps of other JYP acts."
