Singer and actor Kim Ji-yeon, who is better known as Bona of WJSN, is taking a stab at her first period series, taking the role of a royal princess in MBC's upcoming series "Joseon Lawyer."

The historical series, based on the webcomic of the same name, centers around a lawyer, Kang Han-Soo (Woo Do-hwan), in the Joseon Dynasty. He becomes a lawyer to avenge the death of his parents by seeing that the perpetrators face trial. As he takes more cases along with princess Lee Yeon-joo (Bona), he begins to learn the true meaning of defending and seeking justice for those in need.

The series is led by Kim Seung-ho, who co-directed the hit romance series, "Twenty-Five Twenty-One" (2022) and is scripted by Choi Jin-young, who penned the 2017 period romance series, "Queen for Seven Days."

"I've been wanting to do a period genre piece for a long time and I also had faith in the director who I've worked with on previous work ('Twenty-Five Twenty-One')," she said in the written interview released by the network, Wednesday.

The actress plays the role of a princess who is self-confident and high-spirited. She hides her identity as a royal family and approaches Kang to get help to take revenge over her father's fate.

"She truly cares about and wishes for her country and its people," she said, describing her character. "She is upright, outgoing, and has such bright energy so I'm getting positive influence from playing the character."

Actor Woo also shared a glimpse of his character, describing Kang as a multi-layered person.

"I didn't hesitate much because the script was very interesting. What was most appealing was that there were no boring characters in the series. Kang seems to be shallow but is deep and seems to be stupid but is a genius. His enigmatic character is his charm," he said.

"There are so many lines. Because this is a period-legal series, there is a lot of unfamiliar jargon so my main focus is making them easier to understand for the viewers."

The actor added the story will follow his character's coming-of-age. "He doesn't get intimidated and is always confident under any circumstance. Towards the end of the story, Kang put himself on the line for his country, rather than getting tied up in his own personal thirst for revenge."

"Joseon Lawyer" will kick off on March 31 and will air every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m.
