RM of K-pop behemoth BTS has helped restore a "hwarot," or a traditional Korean bridal costume, by donating 100 million won ($75,000).
K팝 거대 그룹 방탄소년단의 RM(랩 몬스터)이 우리나라 전통 혼례복인 ‘활옷'의 보존 처리 작업에 1억 원(7만5000달러)을 기부했다.
In 2021-22, the BTS front man donated 200 million won to the state-run Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation to preserve Korean cultural assets abroad. Half of his donation has been used to restore an embroidered bridal costume donned by royal women during the 1392-1910 Joseon Kingdom, which is owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
이 방탄소년단 리더는 지난 2021~2022년 국외 소재 한국 전통 문화재 보존을 위해 써달라며 국외소재문화재재단에 2억 원을 기부했다. RM의 기부금 절반은 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA) 소장인 자수를 놓은 조선시대(1392-1910) 왕실 여성 혼례복 복원에 사용됐다.
The robe is currently on display at the National Palace Museum in Seoul's Jongno District.
이 혼례복은 현재 서울 종로구 국립고궁박물관에 전시돼 있다.
"The preservation efforts sponsored by RM show how an individual and a state-run institute can join hands to conserve and utilize our cultural heritage," the Korean museum commented. "We should soon return this hwarot to the U.S., so we decided to reveal it to the public before that."
국립고궁박물관은 "RM이 후원을 통해 이뤄진 이번 보존 작업은 민간과 국가기관이 우리 문화유산의 보존 및 활용을 위해 어떻게 협력할 수 있는지 보여주는 사례"라며 "우리는 활옷을 곧 미국으로 돌려보내야 하는데 그 전에 우리 국민에게 이를 공개하기로 결정했다"고 전했다.
The hwarot was restored using traditional methods after being transferred to Korea last October. An unnamed art collector donated the costume to the LACMA in 1939, and it is believed to date back to the early 20th century.
활옷은 지난해 10월 한국으로 이송돼 전통 기법을 통해 복원됐다. 활옷은 한 익명의 현지 미술품 수집가가 1939년에 LACMA에 기증했으며, 20세기 초반 지은 옷으로 추정된다.
