The government said Thursday it will resume disclosing a list of major construction firms involved in fatal accidents, along with details of their ongoing projects, after having halted the practice in 2023.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the measure as part of a comprehensive construction site accident prevention plan, following a fatal accident at an expressway construction site in Anseong on Tuesday, which left four workers dead and six others injured.

The ministry had released such lists annually since 2019, but the practice was suspended in September 2023 following opposition from the construction industry, citing a lack of legal basis.

The plan also includes a real-name accountability system, requiring safety officers' names and contact information to be displayed at high-risk work sites.

The government aims to reduce fall-related fatalities — responsible for roughly half of all construction site deaths — by 10 percent annually.

"We will disclose not only the names of companies involved in fatal accidents but also the specific tunnel or redevelopment projects they are undertaking to raise awareness," a ministry official said.

Incentives will also be introduced, with additional points awarded in technology-based bidding processes for companies whose CEOs demonstrate improved worker safety through site inspections.

Additionally, the government will allocate 35 billion won ($24.2 million) to support small construction firms in purchasing safety equipment for construction projects. (Yonhap)
